NRG Oncology names Dr. Charles Geyer as Associate Group Chair

TheNRG Oncology Group Chairs have created the position of Associate Group Chairand have selected Charles E. Geyer, Jr., MD, to fill the position effectiveimmediately. He will serve alongside the three NRG Oncology Group Chairs,Drs. Quynh-Thu Le, Robert Mannel, and Norman Wolmark.

Dr. Geyer is presently the Vice Chair, NRG Oncology Breast Cancer Committee. His participation with the cooperative groups began long before the 2014 inception of the NCTN program. Dr. Geyer’s experience includes committee leadership positions with legacy cooperative groups and serving as the founding Co-Chairman of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Breast Cancer Steering Committee for four years starting 2008. He transitioned to Chairman Emeritus for 2012 and was recognized for both his contributions and expertise with the NCI Director’s Service Award.

With the formation of NRG Oncology, Dr. Geyer was a member of the inaugural Board of Directors from 2014 until 2020. In addition to his NCTN experience, Dr. Geyer served in the NCORP network as Contact Principal Investigator at Massey Cancer Center Minority Underserved, NCI Community Oncology Research Program (MU-NCORP) from 2014 to 2019.    

Dr. Geyer was the Director, NSABP Medical Affairs from 2004-2011. He returned to Pittsburgh and the NSABP Foundation, Inc. in 2022 as Chief Scientific Officer and chair of the NSABP Foundation Breast Cancer Committee. He is also the co-director of the NCTN program at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and was appointed Interim Division Chief, University of Pittsburgh, Division of Hematology/Oncology in December 2023. 

"Dr. Geyer has a wealth of experience in the formulation and implementation of national and international practice-changing clinical trials and is eminently qualified to occupy this position," stated Dr. Wolmark.

He has devoted most of his career to the design and conduct of multi-institutional, phase III clinical trials and authored over 100 manuscripts in peer reviewed journals.

Dr. Geyer earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas and completed his internal medicine residency and medical oncology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals, Houston, Texas.

Dr. Geyer added, "I have had the privilege of serving in leadership roles in the development and conduct of practice-changing breast cancer trials conducted by the legacy NSABP and NRG Oncology, and it is an honor to receive this leadership appointment from the NRG Oncology Group Chairs. I look forward to the opportunity to serve NRG Oncology and the entirety of the Group’s membership and outstanding research programs."

Dr. Geyer’s depth and breadth of NCTN and clinical trials experience will be highly valuable to the group as we move forward with the renewal of the NRG Oncology NCTN grant. We look forward to his contributions.
